April Kickoff: 清明, 谷雨 & the Turn Toward Earth Season

April is the month when spring stops being a promise and starts being a fact. The trees are fully green, the rain is real, and the ground is soft enough to work. But in Chinese energetics, April is also the month when one season starts handing the reins to the next. 木 (mù) — the Wood element — still rules until 立夏 (lìxià, Start of Summer) on May 6. But after 谷雨 (gǔyǔ, Grain Rain) on April 20, dampness rises, and the 脾 (pí) — Spleen system — begins asking for attention.

This is the month of the ancestors and the outdoors. 寒食 (hánshí, Cold Food Day) on April 4 quiets the kitchen. 清明 (qīngmíng, Clear Brightness) on April 5 opens the season of remembrance and outings. 上巳 (shàngsì) on April 9 invites purification by water. And by the time 谷雨 arrives on April 20, the rain is feeding the grain and the body needs lighter, drier foods to match.

Here is your complete April map — what to watch, what to eat, what to fix at home, and what to do for your body as late spring turns toward Earth season.

Key Dates & Solar Terms

Date Event What It Means for You
Sun, Apr 4寒食 Cold Food DayThe day before 清明. Traditionally a day of no cooking — cold foods, reflection, and stillness. A one-day kitchen rest.
Mon, Apr 5清明 QingmingClear Brightness — the only solar term that is also a major festival. Tomb-sweeping, outdoor 踏青 outings, willow branches, kites. Morning remembrance, afternoon nature.
Fri, Apr 9上巳 ShangsiThe spring purification festival (lunar 3/3). Water cleansing, riverside walks, herbal baths. A fresh start for body and spirit.
Thu, Apr 15US Tax DayAfter filing, reset your paper clutter. Clear the desk, organize financial records, and refresh the wealth corner.
Tue, Apr 20谷雨 Grain RainThe last solar term of spring. Rain feeds the grain. Dampness rises. Spleen care begins in earnest. Also UN Chinese Language Day.
Thu, Apr 22Earth DayA good day for water conservation at home — fix drips, check rain barrels, and audit your household water use.
Fri, Apr 30Arbor Day (US)Planting season. If you plant a tree, mind the 2027 sectors: no digging in the Southwest (Tai Sui) or West (San Sha).
Tip: 清明 falls on April 5 this year (08:13 Beijing time; evening of April 4 in the US). If you are honoring ancestors, you have the full Qingming window — see our complete Qingming guide for customs and our home ancestor space guide for preparing a respectful space.

Home Feng Shui Checklist

April rain tests your home's boundaries. The March wrapup flagged the transition — now it is time to act.

Area Action Why It Matters
Gutters & DownspoutsClear debris. Test flow with a hose. Check where water exits — it should drain away from the foundation, not toward it.Water pooling near the house reads as a wealth drain in feng shui and invites dampness into the structure.
Windows & SealsOpen every window at least once this month. Check seals for cracks from winter contraction. Re-caulk if needed.Windows that have been sealed shut all winter trap stale qi. April is the month to let fresh air back in.
South Sector (Study)Set up the study zone for exam season. Star 4 (文昌 academic star) sits in the South this year. Clear clutter, add good lighting, and if possible place a desk or study table here.AP exams, finals, and college decisions arrive in spring. The 2027 flying star chart gives the South sector academic power all year.
Southwest (Tai Sui)No digging, drilling, or heavy renovation in the Southwest this year. Light maintenance and cleaning are fine.太岁 (tài suì) occupies the Southwest in 2027. Disturbing it is traditionally said to invite misfortune. Respect the boundary.
Damp CornersCheck under-sink cabinets, basement corners, and bathroom grout. Run a dehumidifier if humidity exceeds 60%.Damp corners are stagnant qi traps. In TCM, environmental dampness mirrors internal dampness — heavy, sluggish, and hard to clear.

April Body Rules

Rule What to Do Why It Matters
Layer for cold snapsKeep one warm layer accessible until 立夏 (May 6). 春捂 (chūn wǔ, spring layering) still applies. Cover the neck and lower back in the morning and evening.倒春寒 (late-spring cold snaps) catch people off guard. A warm afternoon does not mean a warm evening.
Lighten meals after 谷雨Before April 20: continue spring greens, fresh vegetables, Liver-friendly foods. After April 20: add barley, adzuki, corn silk tea. Reduce fried and heavy dishes. The Spleen hates dampness. As rain increases, the body needs lighter, drier foods to prevent internal accumulation.
Move outdoorsWalk, hike, garden. Morning movement when the air is fresh. Aim for at least 30 minutes of outdoor time daily. The Liver needs to move in spring. Sitting indoors compresses the very energy that wants to expand. April's warmth makes outdoor movement comfortable and rewarding.
Watch the Spleen signalsAfter 谷雨, notice if you feel heavy, bloated, or foggy-headed. These are early signs of dampness accumulation in TCM.The transition from Wood to Earth is where many people first feel the "spring dampness" that carries into summer if left unaddressed.
Honor the ancestors, honor yourself清明 can stir grief and memory. Give yourself space to feel it. A walk in nature, a moment of quiet — these are not luxuries in spring, they are medicine. In TCM, suppressed grief injures the Lung. The Lung controls defensive qi. Processing emotions directly supports your immune function this season.

The Kitchen Shift

April's kitchen has two phases. Before 谷雨 (April 20), you are still in full spring mode — green vegetables, light proteins, fresh teas. After 谷雨, the rain changes the equation. Dampness rises, and the Spleen needs support.

Phase Key Foods What to Reduce
Apr 1-19 (Early Spring)Green leafy vegetables, asparagus, peas, spring onion, light soups, steamed fish, green teaHeavy stews left over from winter. Excess dairy. Iced drinks (still too early).
Apr 20-30 (Grain Rain)Barley, adzuki bean, corn silk tea, Chinese yam, lotus seed, ginger, aromatic herbs (mint, perilla, coriander)Greasy fried food. Excess sugar. Cold raw salads in the evening. Heavy red meat.
Tip: The single best April pantry addition is barley. 薏米 (yìmǐ, Job's tears) and 大麦 (dàmài, barley) both support the Spleen and gently drain dampness in TCM. A barley tea or barley congee after 谷雨 can become your daily default.

April Don'ts

Avoid Why It Backfires
Digging or renovating the Southwest exteriorTai Sui sits in the Southwest in 2027. Classical feng shui says disturbance here invites setbacks. Wait until the restriction lifts.
Activating the East sector with noise or metal chimesStar 7 occupies the East this year. It dislikes activation — particularly metal objects and loud noise. Keep the East quiet and undisturbed.
Overindulging in sticky rice foods at 清明Qingtuan and nian gao are wonderful in moderation. But glutinous rice taxes the Spleen. Balance sticky treats with warm tea and light meals the next day.
Dropping all warm layers after one warm week春捂 (spring layering) lasts until 立夏 (May 6). 倒春寒 cold snaps can drop temperatures overnight. Keep a jacket accessible through the whole month.
Ignoring roof and gutter maintenanceApril rain is real rain. A clogged gutter or a small roof leak can become a significant problem — and in feng shui, water leaking from the house is wealth leaking from your life.

Week-by-Week Planner

Week Focus Key Tasks
Week 1 (Apr 1-5)Remembrance & rest寒食 (Apr 4): rest the kitchen, eat cold food. 清明 (Apr 5): honor ancestors, go outdoors for 踏青. Open the house to spring air. Set up the study corner in the South sector.
Week 2 (Apr 6-12)Digest & repair3-day lightening plan after Qingming foods. Walk the roof and gutters after the first April rain. Complete the spring rain check. 上巳 (Apr 9): spring purification, herbal bath or riverside walk.
Week 3 (Apr 13-19)Organize & prepareTax Day (Apr 15): file, then clear the paper clutter. Stock damp-draining pantry staples for 谷雨. Close up winter layers but keep one warm jacket accessible. Check the closet for seasonal switch.
Week 4 (Apr 20-30)谷雨 transition谷雨 (Apr 20): begin Spleen care, lighter meals, barley tea daily. Earth Day (Apr 22): fix drips, audit water use. Arbor Day (Apr 30): plant a tree — not in the Southwest or West. Review the month and look toward May.

April is the month where preparation meets action. The ancestors remembered at 清明, the rain that 谷雨 brings, the study corner set up for exam season, the lighter meals that prepare the Spleen for summer — each one is a thread you weave now that holds through the months ahead. Take it one week at a time. The checklist is your friend.
