Best Sleep Direction for Your Kua Number

Calculate your personal Kua number and discover the ideal direction to position your bed for health, wealth, and love.

Did you know that the direction your head points while sleeping can significantly impact your health, career success, and relationships? In feng shui, your personal Kua number determines which directions are auspicious or inauspicious for you — and this applies directly to how you position your bed.

🧮 What is the Kua Number?

The Kua number (also called Gua number) is derived from your birth year and gender. It divides people into two groups:

🌅

East Group

Kua: 1, 3, 4, 9
Best directions: E, SE, N, S

🌇

West Group

Kua: 2, 6, 7, 8
Best directions: W, NW, SW, NE

Calculate Your Kua Number

1 Take your birth year's last two digits
Example: 1985 → 85 | 1990 → 90 | 2000 → 00
2 Add the digits together until you get a single digit
Example: 85 → 8+5 = 13 → 1+3 = 4
3 For Males: Subtract from 10 (or 9 if born 2000+)
For Females: Add 5 (or 6 if born 2000+)
If result is 5: Males → 2, Females → 8
Example: Female born 1988
88 → 8+8 = 16 → 1+6 = 7
7 + 5 = 12 → 1+2 = 3 (East Group)

Each Kua number has four favorable directions, ranked by their benefits:

For Couples: What If Kua Numbers Conflict?

When partners have different Kua groups...

This is common! One person may be East Group while the other is West Group. Here are solutions:

  • Priority Rule: The breadwinner or the person with health issues gets priority
  • Compromise: Choose a direction that's neutral (not worst for either)
  • Alternate: Switch head position seasonally or based on current needs
  • Individual Boost: Use personal items (pillows, crystals) aligned to each person's direction

The Four Inauspicious Directions

Avoid sleeping with your head pointing toward these directions:

  • Jue Ming (绝命) — Total loss, accidents, worst direction
  • Wu Gui (五鬼) — Five ghosts, backstabbing, fire hazards
  • Liu Sha (六煞) — Six killings, scandals, relationship problems
  • Huo Hai (祸害) — Mishaps, frustrations, minor problems

Additional Bed Placement Rules

Beyond direction, also consider these feng shui bed placement principles:

Command Position

See the door from bed but not directly in line with it

Solid Headboard

Headboard against a solid wall for support and stability

No Mirrors

Avoid mirrors facing the bed (disturbs sleep energy)

No Electronics

Keep phones and TVs away from the bed area

How to Find Directions in Your Room

Use a compass app on your phone! Stand in the center of your room and note where each direction is. Then position your bed so your head points toward your chosen auspicious direction.
