🌿 "宜纳财·交易" — a day for nourishing exchanges. Perfect for learning what nourishment YOUR element needs.
You've probably been told to "eat more vegetables" and "drink more water." But Traditional Chinese Medicine asks a more specific question: which vegetables? Which type of water preparation? And when?
In TCM food therapy, there's no universal "best diet." Instead, the right diet depends on your dominant element — the same Five Elements that govern your feng shui. If you already know your BaZi element from our BaZi Calculator, you're about to discover what you should (and shouldn't) be eating.

How to Eat for Your Element
Here's the key principle most people get wrong: you don't just eat foods of your own element. You eat foods that balance your element. If you have too much of one element, you need its controlling element's foods to bring balance.
| Your Element | If Excess (Too Strong) | If Deficient (Too Weak) | Always Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🌳 Wood Person | Eat more Metal foods (white, pungent) to control excess Wood. Garlic, ginger, pear, rice. | Eat more Water foods (black, salty) to nourish Wood. Seaweed, black beans, bone broth. | Excessive alcohol (attacks liver directly), greasy fried foods |
| 🔥 Fire Person | Eat more Water foods (black, salty) to cool excess Fire. Seaweed, miso, watermelon, cucumber. | Eat more Wood foods (green, sour) to feed weak Fire. Green vegetables, lemon water, vinegar dressing. | Excessive spicy food (adds more fire), overheating stimulants like excessive coffee |
| 🌾 Earth Person | Eat more Wood foods (green, sour) to control excess Earth. Salads, sprouts, citrus, vinegar. | Eat more Fire foods (red, bitter) to nourish weak Earth. Tomatoes, beets, bitter greens. | Excessive dairy and cold/raw foods (creates dampness, Earth's worst enemy) |
| ⚔️ Metal Person | Eat more Fire foods (red, bitter) to control excess Metal. Red peppers, dark chocolate, arugula. | Eat more Earth foods (yellow, sweet) to nourish weak Metal. Sweet potato, squash, honey. | Excessive cold/iced beverages (weakens lung energy) |
| 💧 Water Person | Eat more Earth foods (yellow, sweet) to control excess Water. Corn, pumpkin, ginger, warm foods. | Eat more Metal foods (white, pungent) to nourish weak Water. Garlic, mushrooms, tofu, white fish. | Excessive salt (paradoxically weakens kidneys when overdone), ice water |

The 5 Universal Rules (All Elements)
Regardless of your element, these TCM food therapy principles apply to everyone:
| Rule | TCM Wisdom | Western Science Agrees |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Warm breakfast always | The Spleen needs warmth to start the day. Cold cereal with cold milk = cold attack on the digestive fire. | Warm meals increase blood flow to digestive organs, improving nutrient absorption by up to 40%. |
| 2. No ice water with meals | Cold water extinguishes digestive fire (脾胃之火). Room temperature or warm water only. | Cold liquids can slow enzyme activity and constrict blood vessels around the stomach. |
| 3. Eat your biggest meal before 9am | 7-9am is Stomach hour (胃时) — peak digestive power. Eating big at night overloads a tired system. | Studies show front-loading calories leads to better weight management and metabolic markers. |
| 4. Eat with the seasons | Summer = cooling foods (cucumber, watermelon). Winter = warming foods (ginger, lamb, root vegetables). | Seasonal produce has higher nutrient density (harvested at peak ripeness vs transported globally). |
| 5. Stop at 70% full | 七分饱 — eat to 70% capacity. The remaining 30% is breathing room for your Spleen to work. | Caloric restriction research links moderate eating to longevity. Japanese "Hara Hachi Bu" is the same concept. |
